We spend a couple of weeks in Pacific City each year; as a rule, we cook in most days, but save a couple of evening meals for local establishments. Pelican Pub, I'm sorry to say, has gone down in quality and up in prices over the last few years, but the positive side of that is other local eateries getting more customers. One thing to note - there are several establishments that close on Wednesdays (arguably the slowest day of the week, tourist-wise) - your best bet is usually Thursday-Sunday if you're not sure. On Wednesday, we visited the cute little resale shop on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Brooten. Midge, one of the owners, raved about Blackfish Cafe but lamented that it was closed on Wednesdays; when asked about Los Caporales, kitty-corner to the shop, she was enthusiastic about it, too. Midge a long-time local (and a really nice lady) and had nothing but praise for Los Caporales. Mr, the boy and I headed over and weren't disappointed by Midge's promises of a comfortable family-owned restaurant with generous portions. Decorating the walls of the entry are polaroid snapshots of people who visited on their birthdays (mine was two days earlier - should've visited sooner!). We were escorted to a booth in the small, somewhat cramped dining room. I was hesitant at first - running down the middle of the dining was a large table filled with people; it's been my experience that large tables of diners = NOISE, but this group defied that experience. They were quiet, polite and very well-mannered; despite being only a foot away, we barely noticed when they left. The staff are attentive and available; our water was refilled constantly, and the server was prompt in taking and delivering our orders. Mr had the super burrito, I had the verde tostada (extra spicy) and the boy had a burger (of course). I'm not a burger fan, but if I was, I wouldn't recommend it - the patty was dry and almost charred. The Mex, however, was delicious. My tostada was topped with a generous amount of lettuce (yay!) but not really enough tomatoes (boo) or cheese (double-boo). The incredible verde made up for the skimp, though. We also had their cranberry margaritas, which we both enjoyed. The server was very specific when we ordered - crushed or on the rocks? Rimmed with salt or sugar? This was a pleasant change, as I like salt rimmed on the rocks and many restaurants just add their own rim (usually sugar, which I wipe off) without asking our preference. The chips were OK - a little heavy on the corn - and I didn't care for the salsa, which had a distinctly onion-y taste to it and was watery. Mr ate his entire plate, and some of mine and pronounced it delicious. The boy ate his burger and most of his fries - again, I wouldn't recommend the American food options, as the fries were Ore Ida frozen crinkle cut types, obviously reheated and devoid of flavor. But hey, that's what you get when you order burgers at a Mexican place! We'll definitely be back - the generous portions meant a generous lunch the next day that was still awesome reheated!

Lots of deliciousness here. I had a chili rellano, enchilada and soft taco all good, as were the beans. Husband had the fish tacos which he really enjoyed. They are not skimpy with the fillings either. I also enjoyed my glass of Sangria

Although I only have one check in here, I have probably eaten here 20 - 30 times in my life. My family has a beach cabin down the road in Tierra del Mar and we come down several times a year. Every time we visit the beach, we never miss a chance to eat at Los Caporales. We are fans of all the camarones. I love the camarones al mojo de ajo. Great fresh ingredients and just really nice flavor. Honestly, I need my camarones from Los Caporales a couple times a year or I'll melt. :D My family has also been really fond of the family that owns the place because they are just SO nice and they seem to remember us. They also sell awesome shirts! If you're looking for good Mexican on the coast, look no further.

I think this is the best place to eat in Pacific City. The food is always great and tastes incredible. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. They have the best Chicken Mole sauce and there authentic Chille Rellenos are to die for. I have eaten there almost twenty times so far, and every time it's been heavenly.

Best non greasy Mexican food I've ever had. Good portion size, good ingredients. Wonderful family business.

4.5 really! This is good Mexican food, for Pacific City this place rocks. This is Americanized Mexican food. Think Mazatlán or Juan Colorado (except this place is good). Portions were fine. Not too big not too small. Nothing came out greasy not even our quesadilla. Family ordered a Super Burrito, Fajitas, Caritas plate BBQ pork plate and of course the chicken quesadilla for the kids. Everyone was happy. Meat was not fatty; chicken had a delicious hit of lime and salsa was authentic. It is NOT a Pico de Gallo it is a runny chunky salsa. I would go back here any day over the other places in Pacific City. Family owned and operated service was great.

Always go above and beyond. Food is excellent. I always let the waiter pick my meal and have never found something I haven't liked. And the margaritas are the best margarita around, all drinks are best in town.

We stop here to get a large container of their salsa and chips whenever we come to stay for the weekend. They are friendly and affordable.

We tried the caldos seven mares and the chile rellano. Both were fantastic! We will be back again!

We moved from SoCal 9 years ago. This is the best Mexican food we've had since then. I had the crab enchilada and chile relleno combo ... both homemade. Muy bueno!!!

  • Amy B.

Good solid Mexican food with excellent pico de gallo. We shared a dish and it was plenty for the two of us. We ordered the Pork Carnitas plate. The pork was a bit on the dry side, but it was still good. I would consider this a typical mexican food place with rice and beans. The service was great and they were so kind to all the locals. They were nice to us too, but they sincerely liked the regulars.

We are locals and eat here often. The service is always great and the food is awesome. The chips and salsa is delicious! I recommend the super burrito. Its huge, but you have lunch for the next day. Best Mexican food from Tillamook to Lincoln city.

We were new to the area and stopped here because of the positive reviews on yelp. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was mostly very good. The Pollo Asada was flavorful but a bit overcooked. The chill telleno was very delicious, and the chili's were cooked to perfection. The tortilla soup is a must have, and the salsa is delicious, and because it's not thick you can spoon it generously over your rice, beans or entree for extra flavor. The atmosphere is family, very relaxed and casual, perfect for the beach. The kitchen is willing to make some adjustments upon request. Everyone in our party left full and sstisfied. Recommended!

We didn't even get to eat here. The service was so rude we left. We had two toddlers with us and our adults- they tried to seat us at a table that only sat 4 and wouldn't move two tables together so we could be comfortable. The wait stated that was all they were willing to give us or we could wait an hour for a bigger table.

This place was pretty good. There are not many Mexican Restaurants in Pacific City so this place is a gem. I would eat here again.

  • DebandDave H.

The Chili Relleno was very good, the chicken fajitas were also good, not enough spice for me, but what are you going to do? I should of told the server that I wanted the spicy, my bad! The service was great and friendly, lots of people helping. Highly recommend this place.

I went here a few months ago (lazy, so just getting to my review now). We were met by the owners' daughter (maybe six years old and an absolute little cutie). Automatic one-star bump up. The place is owned by the same family (brothers?) as La Mexicana in Tillamook (exact same menu in fact). The food is good. The service is great - personal and friendly. It is your typical Tex-Mex food. But the family operated aspect adds an extra star. Would go here again if I was in the area.

Great food. The server was very personable. Able to help choose the best dish for a friend from out of country. It was an enjoyable time with some very friendly staff.

The food here was such a disappointment that it made me make a yelp account. I'm from So cal so good Mexican food is very easy to find. I went with some Friends, I ordered you standard $6ish big burrito only here it was $13. If you want non standard meat (ground beef, beef or chicken) it's $2 more so no pastor for me. The horchata was ok a little deluged on flavor but ok. Long story short this place is good if you have never eaten real quality Mexican food.

Excellent food! Tortilla soup is a must every visit. My parents have a home in PC and my family and i come frequently. First stop into town and last stop out of town is always this restaurant ! Very friendly family owned business. I'm here for holiday week, and have eaten there everyday since I arrived 3 days ago. Can't wait til they open at noon... Ill be there again today!

  • Lora E.

Good cheesy, mexican fare with lots of sauce. Excellent salsa & chips, good selection of beer and the margarita's were not bad either. I think a little heavy on the tequila; however, that is a good thing in my book...

When in Pacific City, OR during the off-season there aren't much food options, so we headed down the street from our B&B an got some grub at Los Caporales. Everyone seemed nice at the restaurant, which wasn't particularly crowded on a Monday night, and service was fast and courteous...like it should be (ah hem, pelican pub and brewery!). The carafe of margarita was strong and decently priced, which was a plus. As for the food...it is what you get. And I wouldn't expect good Mexican food in pacific city. What I would expect is decent Mexican-American food and that is what you get...maybe a little too greasy, maybe a little too much but not so heavy that you feel like you can't walk after eating...that's what the margarita did to us, I would go back...nice family, decent food, decent margaritas.

Great home style Mexican. I had the mole, hubby had the crab enchilada; both excellent, as was the salsa. Sangria was a bit weak, but tasty.

    (4)
  • Dallin Q.

The food was really good. It's your standard Mexican home cooking. The prices are a little high but the portions are correct. The first round of chips and salsa is on them. After that it's $2 a round. The salsa is pretty thin but packed a punch the night we were there.

    (4)
  • Thomas R.

We went for lunch and had the special chicken enchiladas and beef taco, and an avocado tostada salad. Their home made salsa is excellent and we requested Pico de gallo for an additional charge. I highly recommend the pico, very flavorful! Good service and authentic Mexican food.

  • James D.

We moved into p.c. and asked about local eateries. This place came highly recommended. I ordered to go, the wait was average. The food was bland, the salsa was watery and the tortilla chips were stale and tasted of old oil. The Bill for two combo plates was $40.00. We run a local business and I tell everyone to steer clear of this "Mexican" restaurant.

Better than expected food, pretty good Cadillac margaritas, and great service. Seating was a little crowded and awkward.

I've been coming here for over 5 years, and my husband for over 10 years. We've never had a bad meal or bad service. The food is consistent from one visit to the next, and you can get exactly what you want without any problems and at a very reasonable price. The service is also consistent. It doesn't matter if I'm the only one in the place, or if the restaurant is packed.

    (5)
  • Matthew N.

Friendly service, good drinks (with actual booze in them), and delicious food. Regarding the "watery" salsa some have mentioned... it was no thinner than a lot of real salsas, had excellent flavor and spice, and it's served with a spoon so you can scoop the deliciousness onto a chip or your food. I had the pollo en mole. I love moles. Most have that chocolatey, cinnamon flavor with a little spiciness. This had all that, but also a peanut butter flavor that was amazing for this peanut butter lover. I asked the server about this unusual twist, and he said it's a popular Jalisco recipe.

  • Finn G.

For Mexican food connoisseurs, this likely won't be the best you've ever had. But it is very good mainstream Mexican fare. We have been here three times, with various friends, and every meal has been good. The staff are attentive and friendly. The service is quick. The margaritas are good, even if not all that distinctive. Chips are fresh; salsa is tasty. All in all, when you are at the coast and hankering for a Mexican food fix, this place should not disappoint.

    (4)
  • Topaz S.

The food is decent at this family run establishment. A very large menu with all the standard Mexican fare. We had huevos rancheros, shrimp fajitas, chicken enchiladas and beef tacos. Nothing really stands out other than the chips and guacamole. It's not a bad choice for a meal, just nothing special and a little pricey for the atmosphere (1970s trailer).

The four and five star reviews here are not surprising, given the high number of vacation home owning white folk who "summer" here. Despite the fact that I'm Caucasian and always down for a cheesy and sour cream laden "Mexican" meal, this place fell flat. First, the salsa that others rave about was served with a spoon. It had the consistency and flavor of water, and had about 7 small pieces of onion. In all my years of life I have never seen salsa served with a spoon! Dipping was impossible--instead you have to allow the chip to absorb the red water. Oh, yum. Second, the entire meal was flavorless. The red enchilada sauce, while edible, had less flavor than an .88 Banquet frozen enchilada dinner. Ask me how I know. Third, I did NOT get heartburn from the meal. While you may be saying, "That's great!", let me tell you that is very, very bad. One sign of a good Mexican meal is the heartburn that always follows. That's what spices do to an White Anglo-Saxon gut. That's what it's SUPPOSED to do. That's how you know you've authentic non-American food. Lastly, let's talk about prices: This restaurant has definitely tapped into the tourist market. $12.50 for a three-item meal (with rice and beans) that my 11 year old son was able to finish. Others have described the meals as "HUGE", but when an 80 pound 11 year old cleans the plate, the meal cannot possibly be described as huge. And $2 for more chips and red water? I didn't dare ask for a side of sour cream, for fear I'd be charged an exorbitant fee. In the end, if you're DESPERATE to pay too much for flavorless food and you happen to be in PC, you'll be happy here.

Pretty much what I crave as a Texan -- greasy, salty, meaty Mexican food. We stayed nearby for ten days, and this was my favorite place to eat. I love the atmosphere too. We came in February and the place was packed with locals. The sopaipillas are not actually sopaipillas, though, so skip that. Might as well get your extra calories from a second grande margarita anyway. Yum.

The best chile relleno we've ever had! The family atmosphere is just delightful--we were served by the son and met his mother. The relleno is dad's recipe--and was light, flavorful and delicious. We're from Arizona...who'd think we would have a great Mexican meal in Pacific City OR?

We were slightly lost and stopped our motor home in front of this restaurant and asked for directions to our RV resort. We are from Arizona and enjoy good Mexican food. This was delicious! I had the chile relleno (my standard fare) and it was very good, with sufficient rice and beans of the side. My husband ordered the crab enchiladas--they were to die for!! Very generous amounts of crab, well presented. We absolutely LOVE this place!! Yes, we are those Caucasian travelers another reviewer mentioned. We travel down from Seattle twice a year. We've eaten at many Mexican restaurants in Seattle and different parts of California, as well as in Mexico. The food at this restaurant is very good. The salsa is some of the best we have ever had. So glad we chose to try it out. Excellent service, timely delivery of food and everything was really tasty. You do only get one free basket of chips, but the meal portions are huge...

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
